Planning your own game night? Whether it’s a weekly event, or your and your friends are giving it a first try, here are a few tips on how to host a successful game night.
1. Put away the phones.
If you and your friends are planning a tabletop game night, it’s safe to assume you are aiming to spend some quality time together, screen-free. This is especially important if you are playing a trivia game like Geek Out.
Make a game out of it. First person to look at their phone loses.
2. Choose your game first.
Decide on the game, or games you want to play beforehand. Does everyone know how to play? If you are introducing a new player, it might be a good idea to give them some basic instructions or tips beforehand. If the whole group is learning a new game, allow for time.
Not planning ahead? Have a wide selection of games to choose from. Your selection should include games ranging from high-strategy to fun games you know everyone will enjoy.
Planning a long game night—or better yet an all-nighter? We recommend playing the strategy-heavy games first.
3. Plan for snacks.
What’s a good game night without snacks? Start brainstorming. An ideal game night snack is easy to eat, like finger food, but not too messy. You don’t want your board game of choice to end up with stains.
4. Plan for a meal.
If you are hosting a game night during the hours your guests are used to eating, plan on serving a meal. No one likes to play hungry. You think better after a good meal. Order a pizza!
5. Have fun!
As a busy host, it’s easy to forget to have fun. Don’t try to do everything. If you have too much to do, ask for help. Make sure all players are having fun. It’s important to choose a game that doesn’t leave anyone at an unfair disadvantage. Don’t take winning and losing too seriously. Competition is fun but game night is also about spending time together.
